This summer brought us quite a beautiful storm! Please note, we were safe the entire time and no one was injured in this storm.
North-west of our property about 15 miles, a small storm produced an EF1 tornado (60-70 mph winds). With the extended zoom lens on my camera I was able to capture a few photos of it. It was only on the ground for a couple miles, but rotation continued in the storm as it passed over our property and continued into Cedar Rapids. However, we were safely tucked in the storm shelter with the children as it passed over, so we only know this second hand from the trained storm spotters.
Once the storm was clear of our property and we had the kids back in the house, I returned outside to photograph the backside of the storm. The backside is so often my favorite as the clouds are lit up by lightning and as in this case the sunset caused some lovely coloring.
