Every year I have this debate with my husband over the kids' involvement with reading programs. I love encouraging kids to read, but I usually disagree with the method the libraries use. Thus why we don't participate in them very much.
This year, I decided while participating in Garrison's program was important for many reasons, that I would do a family reading program of my own. I made up charts for the kids, each tailored to their current interests and encouraging them to branch out a bit, and awarded prizes for the number of blocks marked off.
We had a square for reading to Little Miss and Grandma, reading for our church's story time, reading a book about space/a country/a person. The kids were apprehensive at first, but as they each reached their first prize they got excited. I have always read to the kids and encouraged their reading, but this was something new and fun to try.
I think I want to do a winter reading program too! Starting in January and adding some fun and challenge to any snowed-in days we may have ahead of us yet this season.
What are your favorite ways to encourage reading? What encourages or excites you to read most? I would love to know!
